"Colorful Castles"
1st Graders discussed whether castles are real, imaginary, or both? The consensus was that castles are both. We also talked about where you find castles and why they were often built high up in the mountains. They children used geometric shapes to make their castle with sharpie and then they painted their castle with bright colors. They used their imagination to make flying dragons, knights on horseback and much more! They did a beautiful job!
"Matisse Cut-Outs"
The students in 1st grade watched a short video on Henri Matisse and his "Cut-Outs." They discussed the types of shapes, lines, and color they saw in his work. The students cut out organic and geometric shapes to make a colorful collage. We discussed overlapping shapes, different size shapes, and using different color shapes to make an interesting design. Matisse called his cuttings "painting with scissors." The children enjoyed making these striking collages!
"Painted paper"
Students in 1st grade are busy painting paper this week for 2 future projects in art! We will show what they create from their painted paper very soon!
"Painted Paper Fall Collages"
The students in 1st grade used their first painted paper of Fall colors to make a "Fall Collage." They drew pumpkins, squash, gourds, apples, leaves and other Fall related objects with a brown pastel on their painted paper. They cut out their pumpkins, etc. and glued them to a background paper using overlapping. They added lines and veins to the pumpkins and leaves with pastel. For the final step, the children painted swirls, stars, a moon, grass and more with metallic paint to make a beautiful collage!
"3-D Paper weavings with painted paper strips"
Students in 1st grade watched a powerpoint about weaving, then created their own loom out of posterboard and colored paper strips. The children enjoyed making their strips 3-d! For the next step, the students cut their painted stripe paper into strips and weaved them through their loom. After weaving over and under, they glued the end of their strips down. They really enjoyed this lesson and they did a great job!
"chicken little"
Students in 1st grade listened to the story "Chicken Little" and we discussed author, illustrator, setting, and main characters. Some of the 1st grade students created Chicken Little and some of the students created Henny Penny. They made some colorful collages!
"3-D zipper Collages"
Students in 1st grade fringed paper strips and then they folded each part back and fourth, similar to a fan. They used glue sticks on the bottom folds. The students arranged their "zippers" into a design. We had an interesting eye, a beautiful rainbow, and several very creative designs. The kids really enjoyed this project!
"pop art Statue of liberty"
The students in 1st grade watched a quick video on "Pop Art." We discussed where ideas for "Pop Art" originate, such as; movie stars, food, comics, & things that our popular in our culture. We watched a quick 3 minute video about the "Statue of Liberty" and discussed the facts we already knew about "Lady Liberty" and the ones we learned after viewing the video. The children drew the face, crown, background, etc. with pencil then outlined with sharpie. For the last step of the lesson, the children painted their "Statue of Liberty" with bright and bold colors!
"SElf-Portraits"
1st graders looked at and discussed different careers. The children had to draw "what they want to be when they grow-up" for their self-portrait. The children drew with pencil, outlined with sharpie, and then colored with crayons and markers. We had some interesting occupations!
"broadway Boogie Woogie"
Students in 1st grade looked at "Broadway Boogie Woogie" by Piet Mondrian. They also watched a short video that showed movement and the building of "Broadway Boogie Woogie." We discussed the colors, shapes and lines used in the picture. The children created their own interpretation of "Broadway Boogie Woogie."
"Guitar Collages"
The children looked at the painting "The Three Musicians" by Pablo Picasso. We discussed the shapes in the painting. We also discussed the instruments and musicians in the picture. Students drew a guitar on a large piece of construction paper and cut it out. They glued their guitar to a contrasting color of paper. They made an oval for the center of guitar and added four strings. The students decorated their background with cut out shapes and colored with construction paper crayons.
