"warm and cool hands"
The students in 3rd grade started off the year learning about the warm and cool colors. They traced their hands with a pencil and then created a concentric shape around their hand for the background. Next, they outlined with sharpie. Finally, the students painted their hand with either warm or cool colors. They painted their background with the opposite colors of their hand (cool or warm). I loved their finished paintings!
"crazy cactus"
3rd graders had a discussion about abstract, pattern, and cactus. The students created their own abstract cactus landscape drawing with patten. They used markers to add color and patterns to their cactus. Lastly, some students used tissue paper for flowers, etc.
"Perspective trees"
Students created a spooky tree in perspective. They drew with pencil first. Then the students painted their tree and sky with brown, purple, and blue paint. While their painting was drying, students created bats, cats, spiders, etc. out of paper to add to their painting.
"fall still-life drawings"
Some of the 3rd grade classes made an "Autumn Still-life Drawing" using chalk pastels. I brought in pumpkins, pie pumpkins, indian corn, and gourds for them to sketch. We discussed the importance of shading and highlights to make their objects look 3-d and realistic. I was blown away by the awesome job they did on this lesson!
"Hundertwasser neighborhoods"
Students in 3rd grade watched a video on the artwork of Friedensreich Hundertwasser. They drew with oil pastels their own neighborhood town in his style with spirals, bright colors, and organic forms.
"Abstract Flowers"
Students were introduced to the artist Georgia O'Keefe and her big, bold, beautiful flower paintings. They created Georgia O'Keefe inspired abstract flowers with markers. They are so colorful!
"warm and cool color landscapes"
Students discussed the warm and cool colors as well as landscape. They used colored chalk on black paper and created a beautiful landscape. They had to use the warm colors in either the sky or land and the cool colors in the opposite space.
"African Masks"
Students in 3rd grade learned about symmetry and African masks. They made some very creative paper mask using feathers, crepe paper, markers, etc.
"positive and negative space"
3rd graders made a Positive and Negative Space paper cut design. The students picked two contrasting colors of paper, one was 12" by 18" and the other 6" by 18." On the smaller 6" by 18" paper, the students folded it in half the long way ( also know as the hotdog way). on the folded side of the paper, the children drew fun free-form or organic shapes. They left their paper folded and they cut out their shapes. They fit their shapes back in the frame like a puzzle and glued them down. Once finished, the students put glue all over the frame that was left and then flipped it over to the other side of the paper. The Positive Space is the space an object occupies (that would be their cut out shapes). Negative Space is the area around the objects (known as background space, theirs is the frame).
"the Great wave"
Students watched a short video about "The Great Wave" off Kanagawa by Japanese artist Hokusai. Then we discussed the similarities and the differences between land, city, and seascape. They created their own "Great Wave Seascape" using a black oil pastel and paint. They first drew a small wave in the foreground, a medium size wave in the middle ground, and the great wave in the background. The students added a horizon line and Mount Fuji in the background. Some of the students put lines in their waves and created a pattern and several students even added boats with fishermen! I think they did a FABULOUS job!
"POp Art Printmaking"
Students in 3rd grade have been working on a "Pop Art Drawing And Print" the last few weeks. They chose one object to draw and then traced their original design 4 times. In each drawing of their object, they chose different colors and designs to make it into "POP ART." They have been doing a series of 4 prints of the object on a styrofoam plate with a different color for each print. It has been a very long process, but the students have really enjoyed printmaking!

"Warm & Cool Color Symmetrical Designs"
The students in 3rd grade made a symmetrical design using cool colors on one side and warm colors on the other side. They colored their design with markers.
