"pop art candy"
5th Grade enjoyed choosing a candy to draw with pencil! they watched a short video on Pop Artist Wayne Thiebaud and we discussed Pop Art! Once they chose their candy, the children drew it very large and some students even made theirs cropping off the page! They had the choice of painting their candy with tempera paints or using color pencil. They were challenged to come up with a fun or colorful background too! Yes, they did get to eat their candy eventually! I think the 5th graders did an EXCELLENT job!
"Zentangle Animals"
The 5th graders chose an animal to draw with a white crayon or pencil. They could focus on the face or do the entire body of the animal. Once they finished their sketch, the children outlined their animal with metallic markers. We discussed zentangles and I had zentangle handouts for inspiration. The children created very detailed, structured patterns inside of their animal with the metallic sharpies. Some of the students even created a background for their animal. They turned out very COOL!
"Frank Stella Inspired Abstract art"
The students in 5th grade watched a PowerPoint on the artist Frank Stella. We looked at his "Protractor Series" and some of his abstract 3-D work. The students could choose from 3 centers; 1. Abstract Protractor Drawing, 2.) Abstract Collage 3.) Abstract 3-D Sculpture. They used sharpies, markers, color pencils, and Kwik Stix to add color. They came up with some fantastic designs.
"Clay Sculptures"
The students created clay sculptures of choice, after a demo on several different clay techniques. I was amazed at how detailed and tiny some students made their sculptures. Once they were fired in the kiln, the students painted the sculptures with glaze. Their glazed sculptures were fired again and turned out beautiful!
"op art"
The students watched a PowerPoint on optical illusions. They learned about the Op Artist M.C. Escher and Bridget Riley. They also viewed a few illusions that played tricks on their eyes! They chose from 5 different op art lessons. They drew with pencil and added color with sharpies and markers. They turned out great!
