"Safari September Tigers"
Students in Kindergarten discussed going on a safari and what kind of animals they might see? First we talked about the shapes to use for the head, body, etc. and then they did a quick drawing of a tiger with black crayon. We discussed patterns; especially stripes. They painted their tiger and background with liquid tempera paint. I was very impressed with the stripe patterns!
"PAUL KLEE INSPIRED ABSTRACT CITYSCAPES"
The students in Kindergarten learned about the artist Paul Klee and looked at his picture "Castle and Sun,"1928. We discussed the art terms: shapes, abstract, skyscrapers, cityscape, oil pastels, and pastel resist. The students traced geometric shapes to make buildings with a pencil. They colored their shapes and buildings with oil pastel. The last step was to paint a blue wash over their entire picture-pastel resist.
"Torn Paper Landscapes"
The children learned about landscapes and looked at several pictures of them. We discussed mountains, fields, hills, valleys, rivers, sky, and sun. We also talked about collage, and overlapping on our background paper. The children chose 4 or 5 different colors of rectangles for their landscape. They began by tearing a rectangle with their hands to make their 1st hill or mountain. They glued their 1st mountain, etc. near the top of the page and overlapped their way down to the bottom of the page. The last step was to tear out a sun and some clouds for the top of their picture. I think they did an AWESOME job!
"Modigliani Inspired family Portraits"
Students watched a 2-minute video about Amedeo Modigliani. They learned that he created portraits of friends and family. They also learned that he was influenced by African sculpture and masks. He carried this influence over into his portraits by making the faces mask-like, with long oval or pointy chins, small almond shaped eyes, long necks and noses, and small button mouths. The children chose someone in their family to draw with sharpie and the last step was to paint their portraits. They really enjoyed choosing a family member to create "Modigliani style."

"Dog collages"
The students in Kindergarten looked at newspaper collages by Denise Fiedler and I read "IF YOU GIVE A DOG A DONUT" by Laura Numeroff for inspiration. The children drew a dog face and a body on newspaper and cut it out. They glued their dog to a background color and created the facial features from construction paper. For the last step, the children used painted paper to make a background of grass, clouds, and a sun. I think these dogs have some AWESOME personalities!
"Scarecrows"
The students in Kindergarten enjoyed making scarecrows in art class. We discussed scarecrows and fall. The children drew their scarecrow with brown or black oil pastel. Next, they painted their scarecrow with liquid water colors. When they came in the next week, the children stamped a background with shapes. Next, the kids cut out their scarecrow, glued it to their stamped background, and lastly they added straw for hair.
"Leaf Texture Rubbings"
Kindergarten has been learning about texture in art this week. The children used the backside of leaves to create a texture rubbing with crayons. Once they filled their page with different size, shape, and color leaves, the students painted the entire page with yellow liquid watercolor. When the veins and details of the leaves were revealed, the kids thought it was like magic! They did a beautiful job!
"If the Dinosaurs Came Back"
The students in Kindergarten listened to the story "If the Dinosaurs Came Back" by Bernard Most. The first day in art, they created a cityscape with black sharpie. The next time they came to art, we discussed different kinds of dinosaurs. I demonstrated on the board an easy way to make a dinosaur. The children also had handouts at their table with different dinosaurs for inspiration. I love the black and white city with a pop of color-the dinosaur!
"Whimsical Trees"
The children chose a fun tree template to trace with sharpie. They created different types of lines and patterns on their trees with sharpie. They colored inside of their patterns with crayons. They also used "Kwik Stix" to paint around their patterns. They really loved using the "Kwik Stix," which are solid tempera paint in a stick. They look like colored glue sticks and they dry in 30 seconds.
"Shape Penguins"
The students in kindergarten created a puffy paint and salted snowflake winter background in art. The next week in art class, the students listened to the story "If You Were a Penguin" by Wendell and Florence Minor. We discussed geometric shapes and the children created their own "Shape Penguin" to collage to their winter background.
"Mosaic Hearts"
The students in Kindergarten learned about paper mosaics. The children traced a large heart template on black paper with a white crayon. For the next step, the children cut strips of paper into small squares or rectangles. The students used a paintbrush to put glue on top of their heart line. They placed their rectangles on top of the glue. When they were ready for the next heart, they just traced inside of their big heart with the brush and glue and continued placing their shapes on the glue.
"Silly Sculptures"
Some of the Kindergarten classes created a "Silly Sculpture" using a small piece of styrofoam as a base, pipe cleaners, colored noodles, dot stickers, and glittery tape. They really enjoyed creating a 3-D project!
"Love Monsters"
The kindergarten students watched a video of the storybook "Love Monster" by Rachel Bright. They drew a monster with pencil then used cardboard and black paint to outline their monster. This helped him look hairy! Then the students outlined the eyes, mouth, etc. with black paint and a paintbrush. They created a colorful background with paint. When they came back to art the next week, the students painted their monster red and added hair with cardboard and black paint. Some of the students collaged a heart on their monster or in their background. They are ADORABLE!
"Spring Rabbits"
The kindergartners listened to the story "I Love my Little Storybook" by Anita Jeram. On the first day in art, the students created an oil pastel and watercolor background for their rabbit. During the next art class, they drew a rabbit with sharpie and added patterns/visual texture for hair. Next, they cut out their rabbit and glued it on their background.
"Pop Art Cupcakes"
The students in Kindergarten were introduced to the Pop Artist Wayne Thiebaud. The students watched a 2-3 minute video on his wonderful Pop Art desserts. In the 1st art class, the students cut a cupcake bottom out of colored construction paper. Next, they painted 5-7 lines down with paint. They added polka dots and other shapes in between the lines to create a pattern. When they came back the next week, the children tore or cut paper in strips and created the icing. Lastly, most students added sprinkles with markers and some even put a cherry on top!
"Claude Monet Inspired Flowers"
The students in Kindergarten learned about Impressionism and the artist Claude Monet. The students looked at Monet's paintings of "Irises" and painted their own beautiful flowers.
"Mondrian Inspired Collages"
The students in Kindergarten watched "Building the Boogie" on YouTube. This video was about the making of the painting "Broadway Boogie Woogie" by Piet Mondrian. We discussed what the shapes represented-cars, roads, buildings, New York City. The children created a collage using only scissors, glue, red, yellow, and blue paper.
