"Safari September Giraffes"
3rd grade students created a Giraffe drawing or painting during September. In music, students were singing wonderful "Safari September" songs. In art, each grade created an animal they might see on safari. 3rd grade impressed me with their beautiful drawings and paintings!
"Egyptian Mau Cats"
Students in 3rd grade are studying ancient civilizations in their classrooms. They are creating an art project from each civilization with me in the art room. Our first project was to draw an "Egyptian Mau Cat." The students watched a PowerPoint about the Egyptian Cat. The students used handouts to do an observational drawing of a cat.
"Chinese Ming Vases with cherry blossoms"
During 3rd grades study of China, the students created a "Ming Vase with Cherry Blossoms" in art class. We discussed Ming Vases and the symbolism of the Cherry Blossom in China. This was a very simple lesson, but with such beautiful results. The kids enjoyed it too!
"Greek Columns"
3rd graders chose to draw a Doric, Ionic, or Corinthian Column. We discussed Greek Columns in class and the students used white chalk and charcoal to create their drawing.
"Roman Colosseum"
Students in 3rd grade watched a 2 minute video on facts about the Roman Colosseum. They learned that it had 80 entrances, it was used for gladiator fights, mock sea battles, drama, concerts, and more. They enjoyed drawing the colosseum by following me step by step or observing a handout of the colosseum.
"Mali Mudcloth"
.The children in 3rd grade created a mud cloth using brown paint. Some students used black to outline some of their symbols. They have been learning about Mali in their classroom. Some classes went to an interactive website in their classroom and created their own mud cloth design on paper. The students watched a PowerPoint in art and we discussed the actual process of using mud! Wouldn't that be fun? We also discussed the the meaning behind some of the symbols and the students created their own mud cloth design. Some teacher bought actual cloth for their students. Other classes created their design on paper. They all turned out great!
"cityscape Silhouettes'
3rd grade created a beautiful "radiating" warm or cool color sky with fine point markers. The children watched a PowerPoint about positive and negative space, cityscapes and silhouettes. After the students finished their background, they created a silhouette of a city on black paper. The last step was to glue their cityscape silhouette to their beautiful background. I love how they POP!
"Hundertwasser Houses"
The students in 3rd grade watched a PowerPoint about the artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser. They learned about his paintings, that often had faces in them, his trees that look like lollipops and much more. We also looked at several of his architectural designs like "The Ronald McDonald House" in Essen, Germany. The students learned that he did not like straight lines, he loved to use bright vibrant colors, spirals, patterns and organic forms in his artwork. The students created their own "Hundertwasser Inspired House." They used black paint mixed with glue to outline their pencil drawing. The next week, they painted their house and landscape background with liquid watercolors. They are so fun and vibrant!
"zentangle hearts"
The students in 3rd grade created concentric hearts. They added color and some patterns to their hearts. In the background, the students created zentangles, very detailed, structured patterns, with sharpies. Most of the students enjoyed "tangling!" They found it very relaxing! We have some very patient and detailed artists!
Hokusai's "The Great Wave"
The 3rd grade students watched a PowerPoint on the artist Hokusai and his woodblock print "The Great Wave." The students created their own interpretation of the wave with pencil. The students outlined their drawing with sharpie and painted with tempera cakes. They were very creative and colorful seascapes!
