"Hopes and dreams Self-portraits"
5th graders worked on their "Hopes and Dreams" for art this year. The students had to write at least 2 specific "Hopes and Dreams." They also had to create a self-portrait sketch with pencil. Once their self-portrait was done, they added color with color pencils and created a background.
"Zentangle Safari September Animals"
The students in 5th grade watched a PowerPoint on zentangles and safari animals. The students picked an "animal of choice" that you would see on a safari. The students looked at real photos of safari animals for inspiration. First, they sketched their animal with pencil. Next, they outlined with sharpie. With a ultra fine sharpie, the students added zentangles inside of their animal. Some students are adding color to their background. They are working very hard on them and I can't wait until more are finished!
"Picasso Aliens or Monsters"
After watching a very short video, 5th grade students learned a little about Pablo Picasso and cubism. The students could choose any type of monster or alien to collage. To make their face similar to Picasso's cubistic style, the students had to show a front and a side view of the face on their 2-d collage.
"rural landscapes"
The students watched a YouTube video on artist Grant Wood and learned about his rural landscapes. They also learned about his most famous painting "American Gothic." The students drew a landscape with pencil. They were asked to show distance in their landscapes and to add some patterns to some of their fields. They used watercolor pencils and sharpies to add color. They are creating some very detailed landscapes with barns, mountains, trees, ponds, roads, etc.
"The Northern Lights"
The students in 5th grade watched a video on "The Northern Lights." The students used colored chalk pastels to create a beautiful Northern Lights sky! They blended and smudged colors together! The last step was to use black pastel to create a silhouette of land, trees, animals, etc. They turned out so BEAUTIFUL!
"Foil Embossing"
The students in 5th grade created a drawing of choice on cardboard, then added glue and string on top of the drawing. Next, the students rubbed down the foil and glued the ends down on the back. For the last step, they colored on the foil with sharpies. They had some very original designs!
"Radial Design Hearts"
We discussed radial symmetry in art. The students learned that radial artwork will radiate out from a center point. The students folded their paper to create four squares. This showed them where the center point was to begin their design. They created overlapping hearts, as well as the same size and color hearts. They created some beautiful designs!
"Relief cardboard Masks"
The 5th graders used cardboard to create a relief mask inspired by Kimmy Cantrell. Kimmy is an artist out of Atlanta, Georgia, who is known for making asymmetrical masks out of clay.
"Clay Sculptures"
The students used white clay to create a sculpture of their choice. We reviewed some of the clay techniques like scoring and attaching the clay. I also showed them some different clay methods like the pinch and coil techniques.
"Koru Spiral Plants"
The 5th graders watched a PowerPoint on the Koru Spiral Plant found in New Zealand, The learned about the artist Raewyn Harris, whose artwork is seen below and inspired by this beautiful plant! The students drew with pencil and outlined with sharpie. For the beautiful colors, the students used liquid watercolors.
"Treehouse Designs"
"Frank Stella Inspired Protractor Designs"
The students were introduced to the artist Frank Stella and his "Protractor Design Series." Some of the students used color pencils and some chose markers to add color.
"One Point Perspective Cityscapes"
The 5th graders watched a drawing video on a one point perspective cityscape. They created buildings on all four sides of their square paper making them all go back to a vanishing point. They used rulers, pencils, and sharpies. Some of the students colored their sky with oil pastels, markers, or color pencils. Some of the students added a lot of color to their buildings too! I just love this lesson!
"Name Designs"
The students drew their name or initials really large with bubble letters, block letters, or a letter style of their choice. Next, they added patterns, designs, and color to their name. They also drew things that they love, sports they play, places they go, pets they have, and much more!
