"Warm & cool Color landscapes"
Students in 3rd grade created a "Warm and Cool Color Landscape" using chalk on black paper. The children drew their landscape with a black oil pastel and colored their sky with the warm or cool colors. They colored their land with the opposite colors of the sky. (cool or warm). Some students added snow on their mountains or highlights with a white pastel. The last step was to re-outline their landscape with black pastel. Although this was a messy project, the landscapes turned out great!
"Falling Leaves"
3rd graders are working on beautiful leaf paintings. The students drew their own leaf template. They cut out their template and then traced their leaf several times on white paper to make an interesting composition showing movement. We also discussed cropping and using contrasting colors for the leaves and background. The majority of 3rd graders are still working on the painting process!
"Notan Designs"
Students in 3rd grade watched a PowerPoint about Japanese Notan Designs. They made an asymmetrical paper cut design using light and dark colors to create harmony. Japanese Notans are known for light and dark contrasting colors-usually black and white. We also discussed positive and negative space, which is used in Notans.
"Laurel Burch Inspired Cats"
Students in 3rd grade watched a powerpoint on the artist Laurel Burch. We discussed her life, work, etc. and the students created their own Laurel Burch inspired cat. We talked about Folk Art and the kids created detailed patterns on their cats! They colored their cats with bright colored markers and crayons! I love them!
"Calder Inspired paper sculptures"
"winterscapes"
Students in 3rd grade created a winterscape using foreground, middle ground, and background. Using a sharpie, they created larger trees in the foreground, medium size trees in the middle ground, and the smallest trees in the background. Some students created a house and tracks in the snow. For the last step, the students created a beautiful sky and snowflakes.
"Greek Krater Vases'
While studying Greece in social studies, students also learned about Greek pottery and made a krater vase in art class. Students learned how to make a pinch pot and to roll out coils for the base and handles of their pot.
They were fired in the kiln and then students painted with black paint on their red clay. This is called black-figure pottery.

"OP ART"
The students in 3rd grade created an "Op Art Design" using sharpie and colored pencils. For the first step, the children created a horizontal wavy line all the way across the middle of their paper. Next, they created 6-8 points on their line. Then the kids created "mountains or rainbows" from one point to the next point. They created their "rainbows" one on top of the other until they cropped off the page. They used shading techniques to color in their design. They were very time consuming, but turned out GREAT!
"Pop art food collages"
The students watched a "Pop Art" video about food and the artist Wayne Thiebaud. After looking at handouts on different foods, the students chose a food to create into a collage. They really enjoyed thinking of different foods and ways to create their appetizing collages.
