"Romero Britto Inspired 1st Initial Designs"
The students in 3rd grade watched a short video about Pop Artist Romero Britto. They learned he was self-taught and that he works with several companies, including Disney. They created the 1st letter of their name really big in block or bubble letters. They outlined their initial with black sharpie. Next, they drew and created repeating designs and patterns. The designs and patterns were about them. They drew numbers, letters, sports, animals, food, etc. that they love! For color, the students used markers and crayons. They did a fabulous job with detail, patterns, and color! They POP off the page! Romero Britto would be PROUD!
"Kente Cloth Collage Designs"
The children watched a PowerPoint on Kente Cloth. They learned about what the colors and designs represented. They did a great job recreating some authentic Kente Cloth designs. They also created their own designs, too!
"Yayoi Kusama Inspired Pumpkins"
3rd grade watched a PPT on Yayoi Kusama. Yayoi loves polka-dots and pumpkins, so we looked at some of her pumpkin paintings and sculptures with dots. She is a Japanese artist that even has shoes and handbags with dots on them. The students observed some real pumpkins and drew their own pumpkin on orange or yellow paper with a pencil. They outlined their pumpkin with sharpie. They added dots of paint with a q-tip. Once their pumpkin was dry, they cut it out and glued it to a background color. For the last step, the students used metallic markers to make a decorative background. I am so in love with this project and the kids really enjoyed it!
"Ancient Civilizations"
The students in 3rd grade have been studying ancient civilizations in their classroom and in the art room. They were introduced to Greek Comedy or Tragedy Masks, Chinese Bamboo Painting, and Egyptian Pyramids Landscape. The students were able to choose which center they liked best. Once they finished with one center, the students could move on to a different center. Most students were able to do at least 2 or 3 centers. The last center introduced was drawing the Roman Colosseum. The students did an observational drawing while looking at a picture of the Colosseum. The students were very engaged and really enjoyed moving on to different centers. They learned a little information/history on each center/civilization through very short videos or a PowerPoint.

"Clay Sculptures"
They students were shown several different clay techniques. Next, the students chose what kind of sculpture they would like to make out of white clay. We had some very creative 3-d artists! After their clay air-dried for at least a week, they were fired in the kiln. The bisqueware was then glazed and fired in the kiln a 2nd time. This is a very long process and the children did a great job being patient!

He created amazing collages about these musicians, as well as other beautiful pieces about his life and heritage.
