"Folk Art Landscapes"
Students in 5th grade watched a short video showing the work of contemporary N.Y.C. artist Heather Galler. We talked about Folk Art and the bold, colorful designs they use in their work. Students drew a landscape with pencil, outlined with sharpie and are making awesome patterns and designs! The next step is to color their patterns with crayons and lastly to paint over their landscape. The students are creating some very beautiful and detailed landscapes! I am impressed!
"One point perspective Cityscape"
Students in 5th grade have been working on one point perspective cities in between our "Unearthed" project with UVA. The children drew on all four sides of their paper and drew their buildings so they lined up with the vanishing point. Next they outlined with sharpie and then added color with markers.!
"Winter Birch Trees"
5th graders painted a beautiful winter sky on a white background. On another piece of white paper, students painted 3 or 4 birch trees with black paint. Once the trees were dry, the students cut out the trees and glued them to their sky background. For the last step, most of the students added white snowflakes. They made some awesome winterscapes!
"Foil Embossing"
Students in 5th grade created an abstract design and learned to create a foil embossing. They used yarn and glue on a piece of cardboard to create their design. Once the glued dried, the students took a piece of foil and put it on top of their yarn design. They rubbed the foil down to find their yarn design and then they folded the extra foil onto the backside. We used glue sticks to glue the foil down on the back. For the last step, the students used colored sharpies to decorate their design. The students really enjoyed this process and they did a great job!
"Koru spiral Plant"
The children watched a PowerPoint about "Koru Spiral Plants" and viewed the work of the artist Raewyn Harris. Harris creates art inspired by the Koru Spiral Plant. The children had to have at least one spiral in their design. Some students created a very plant like design, while other students chose to make their design very abstract. The kids also had several choices of medium to color in their design.
"Molas"
Students in 5th grade watched a PowerPoint about molas and the Kuna Indians. We discussed the Kuna women and the beautiful molas they make using a reverse applique technique on material. They learned that in the Kuna's native language, "mola" means "shirt" or "clothing." The children learned that the inspiration for molas came from realistic and abstract designs of flowers, sea animals, and birds. Although molas are sewn, the 5th graders created a "Mola Collage" using white paper, markers, and colored construction paper. I think they did an excellent job and we had some very beautiful molas.
"Seascapes"
Students in 5th grade painted a sky on a large piece of white paper with tempera cakes. On another piece of large white paper, the students painted the sea with blue, turquoise, and white paint.
"Tree of life"
5th graders watched a video about the artist Gustave Klimt. They learned about his "golden period" and "Art Nouveau." The students made a tree in the "Art Nouveau" style with swirly, curvy lines, and bright colors. They painted their trees with gold paint and chose their own bold colors for the background. We also discussed symbols and the students were suppose to draw and paint at least 3 symbols about that represented them.
