"Pop art self-portraits"
After watching a 3 minute video about Pop Art and its artists, 2nd grade had a discussion about Pop Art. We discussed its characteristics, techniques, and some of the Pop artists like Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. Students did a self-portrait painting in the Pop Art style using the primary colors and choosing 1 word to describe their personality.
"Scarecrows"
Students in 2nd grade created a scarecrow collage using oil pastels, paint, printed paper, popsicle sticks, raffia, buttons, yarn and glue. They enjoyed talking about Fall and creating these wonderful scarecrows!
"Who said giraffes can't dance?"
The 2nd graders listened to the story "Giraffes Can't Dance" by Giles Andreae and then drew their own giraffe. The students used crayon and paint to finish their dancing giraffes!
"KLimt's cat"
2nd Grade recently learned about the artist Gustav Klimt and Art Nouveau. The students created their own cat using Art Nouveau techniques and gold and bronze paint like Klimt used in his "Golden Phase." The cats look beautiful! Check them out on the bulletin board when you come through the front door of the school.
"Snowmen at Night"
After listening to the story "Snowmen at Night," 2nd graders drew a picture of a snowman with oil pastels. They had to show what their snowman was doing out at night. Here is some of their awesome snowmen:
"Woven Cityscapes"
Students in 2nd grade made a rectangle loom from paper. They wove strips of paper over and under on their loom. They created buildings out of their looms by adding windows, doors, and a roof. Next they glued their buildings to a background piece of paper and then added sidewalks, roads, bridges, cars, people, etc. to their cityscape. They got really creative!
"koi Fish"
Students in 2nd grade have been studying China in their classrooms and in the art room! We started a lesson on Koi fish. We discussed popular legends and the symbolism of the fish to the Chinese. The students drew with crayon and then painted their fish, plants, and water. I love them! Next lesson in our unit will be a "Cherry Blossom Still-Life."
"Cherry Blossoms"
After a discussion about Ming vases and short video about Cherry blossoms, the students drew their own vase on white paper and outlined it with a blue marker. They cut their vase out and glued it to a background color. Next , they drew the branches with a brown oil pastel. The last step was to use tissue paper and glue to make the blossoms. The children learned that the symbolism of the cherry blossom in China is feminine beauty and power. It also symbolizes love. They students enjoyed making the Cherry blossoms and learning about China in the art room!
"Matisse inspired collages"
Students in 2nd grade viewed an awesome video of Henri Matisse and his work. They created a collage cutting organic and geometric shapes out with scissors. The students were not allowed to draw the shapes first! Once the children started cutting, they loosened up and were very creative! Matisse called this"painting with scissors." The children used contrast of color, shape, and size in their beautiful collages!
"CLOse up cows"
Students in 2nd grade enjoyed learning how to draw a cow close up! They drew the cows face really large and then added a background in the distance. They used sharpie and crayon to draw and color their picture. They made some cute cows!
"Abstract Spring Flowers"
After discussing the meaning of abstract, the students created a Spring abstract flower picture. They were introduced to Kwix Stix, which are solid tempera paint in a stick form. They enjoyed using these and markers to color their picture.

"Wayne THiebaud Cakes"
The students in 2nd grade viewed a video on the work of Wayne Thiebaud. Students created their own cake, then cut it out and glued it to a background. Some students made a plate or cake stand for their cake. They also decorated the background.
